Tokyo DisneySea

To keep up with our tradition of going to Disney on Christmas (Disney Paris ’07) we decided to go to Tokyo over the Christmas holiday so we could go to Disney on Christmas Day. We actually discovered that there are two parks: Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea. We did a little research on the two parks and saw everyone raving about DisneySea. Tokyo Disneyland is apparently pretty similar to all of the other Disneylands but DisneySea is an amazing park with so much attention to detail and many different rides with different stories behind the rides. (When we first heard of DisneySea we kind of assumed, from the name, that it was some sort of water park but it isn’t.)

DisneySea has seven themed areas or as they call them, “ports of call.” Each of these areas was amazing. There is so much attention to detail. Pictures don’t really do it justice, plus we only brought a small point and shoot, so the pictures are not great.

When you first come in, you walk into Mediterranean Harbor which is situated around a large water area. This area has Venetian Gondolas, a Fortress area, a Pirate Ship, and is decorated to look like an Italian port city.

The next area is Mysterious Island which is dominated by Mount Prometheus (a giant volcano). The main rides in this area are: Journey to the Center of the Earth and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Mermaid Lagoon is the next area that you come to and is decorated in the theme of The Little Mermaid. This area has a ton of detail and is fun to walk around and look at. All of the rides in this area are for little kids.

The Arabian Coast is modeled after Aladdin and also has amazing detail. There are three main rides here: Sinbad’s Storybook Voyage, The Magic Lamp Theater, and a 2-story Caravan Carousel. Sinbad’s Storybook Voyage reminded us a lot of It’s A Small World but it was done a lot better. The animatronics were awesome and the rooms had incredible detail. There was even a room that smelled of bananas to go along with what was happening in the scene.

Lost River Delta has two really popular rides: Raging Spirits (a roller coaster) and Indiana Jones Adventures: Temple of the Crystal Skull. This area has a huge “Central American Aztec pyramid” (the Indiana Jones ride is in this) and the rest of the area is made to look like a jungle surrounding the pyramid.

Port Discovery is a pretty small area which is made to look like “a marina of the future.” There are two main rides: StormRider and Aquatopia. In StormRider you descend into the eye of a storm on a “flying laboratory,” and experience what it is like to be in a storm. This ride was pretty cool, they used water to help simulate it and had various objects crashing through into the theater.

The last area is the American Waterfront which has a huge passenger ship, the SS Columbia. The area is designed to look like the northeastern seaboard of the United States in the early 20th century. The main attraction in this area is the Tower of Terror which actually has a different storyline than all of the other Tower of Terrors but the ride was awesome and had so much detail.
